The Appeal-Democrat was among a handful of newspapers nationwide selected for Editor & Publisher magazine's "10 Newspapers That Do It Right" honors.
Editor Susan
Wordsmith at your service. No matter where my career path may take me, I think I will always be a copyeditor at heart, she who sits behind the scenes, quietly transforming the raw into the eloquent. An ace copyeditor not only proofreads for grammatical and syntactical accuracy but also intuits the writer’s intended message and ensures that message is communicated accurately to the reader.

The Depthies
In the midst of some drawer tossing, I came across several VERY old newspapers that were stuffed into the back of a file cabinet drawer. Naturally, I had to pause my drawer tossing and examine these treasures to deduce why the papers had been saved.
There were clippings dating back to the 1940s and '50s of family birth announcements, death announcements, etc.
Considering the recent box-office success ("success" seems an inadequate word) of the 3-D blockbuster "Avatar" and all the accoutrement hoopla over theatrical and home TV 3-D entertainment, it was with great relish that I read The Sacramento Bee's story of Dec. 23, 1952, by Erskine Johnson, "Fate Of Depthies Is In Customers' Hands."
We in 2010 talk like we are on the cutting edge of the 3-D revolution. Sheesh. If I hadn't told you the date on the above story (AND if the celebrities' names weren't also a giveaway of the era they were operating in), you, dear reader, would almost swear this was a CONTEMPORARY news column. (Almost.)

Your office chair is killing you
Your Office Chair Is Killing You - Bloomberg Businessweek
If you're reading this article sitting down - the position we all hold more than any other, for an average of 8.9 hours a day - stop and take stock of how your body feels. Is there an ache in your lower back? A light numbness in your rear and lower thigh? Are you feeling a little down?

RIP, Robert B. Parker

I was sad to learn today of Robert B. Parker's sudden death at the age of 77. He was a prolific author of some of my favorite book series, and he will be sorely missed.

Newspaper shows its slip
As a person who has done newspaper page layout daily for a number years, I have to admit that I've actually committed this same error before – not once, but at least twice. Say it with me now: EVERYONE NEEDS AN EDITOR!!! Or, in this case, better proofreaders.
